Experience stunning and breathtaking scenery in an ancient volcanic mountain (MT.Kenya). Mt. Kenya is the 2nd highest mountain in Africa and the highest of all Kenyan mountains at 5199m (17058 feet).The main peak rises sharply from the 3rd highest peak (Lenana, 4,985m, Nelion,5,188m to the Batian peak 5,199m. Other highest
peaks for technical climbers include point John at 4,883m, point Dutton at 4,885 and point Piggott at 4,957m.
To climb point Lenana(4985M), you only need a decent pair of hiking shoes and warm gear. Major Routes

There are several routes up the mount. The major ones are:

  • Naro Moru Route is the shortest, fastest to point Lenana peak. Camping; Met Station, Mackinders Campsite, and Austrian Hut
  • Sirimon Route passes through impressive yellowwood forests onto beautiful alpine scenery. Camping: Old Moses camp, Shipton camp and Austrian Hut.
  • Chogoria Route is the most scenic. The trail passes through the enchanting hall tarns, sheer cliffs, and spectacular Gorges valley onto beautiful Lake Michaelson. Camping at; Meru Bandas, Road head, Mintos and Austrian Hut.

1. Spectacular Sunrise/Set View.

For a majestic sunrise and sunset, go to Mt. Kenya Lenana Peak or climb Nelion point.

2. Technical Climb (Nelion/ Batian)

 

The North Face is preferred during the northern hemisphere summer (June to October).Since the mountain is at the equator, the sun is usually at the marginal to the north of the mountain. Thus, the snow and ice are less,making climbing easier with the warmer rocks.The southern Face is used during December to March period. The climber Passes through Nelion, where a night can be spent at Howells hut before traversing the Gate of Mist to Batian
the following day.It is advisable to allow an extra day at Austrian Hut (4790m) in case the weather is not suitable

3 . Austrian Hut.

 

Austrian Hut is at (4790m) on mountain Kenya. It is a good hut for the ascent to Lenana peak for sunrise and sunset spectacular view. You can use it as a base camp for climbing Nelion and Batian using the normal route (South East Face), Point Thomson, point Melhuish and Point John. Also, you can use it as a base to explore the surrounding.Following Gerd Judmeier’s rescue, the Hut was built with Austrian funds.

4. How long does it take to climb Mt. Kenya?

It takes two nights and three days to climb to point Lenana using the Naro Moru route. However, it is advisable to take about five days for good acclimatization to prevent altitude sickness. Other routes take about 4 to 8 days, based on the hikers’available time and fitness, as they are longer and scenic.
