Places to visit when in Rwanda.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is among the most thrilling activities on our Africa excursion.
Rwanda is home to 12 gorilla families in the Volcanoes National Park. An excursion would
involve trekking for several kilometers in the park in search of the habituated gorillas living in
the park. The volcanoes’ national park is situated in the Musanze district, just 2 hours’ drive from
Kigali, the capital city, and the north of the country. Here, ACROSS AFRICA TOURS looks at some
interesting facts about trekking in the park.

1.What You Need to Know About Gorilla Trekking
Habituation is how gorillas in Volcanoes National Park become habituated. A professional tour guide will train the gorillas to become accustomed to human interaction. Unhabituated gorillas are often wild and flee or attack humans when interacting with them.Additionally, on 6th September of every year, baby gorillas in Rwanda go through the naming ceremony called Kwita Izina. The naming ceremony makes tracking and following the newly named gorillas easier as they trek further inside the jungle. In Rwanda, the minimum allowed age for gorilla trekking is usually 15 years.   All visitors must report to the volcanoes’ national park to be assigned to a tracking group, which begins at 7 a.m.Each tracking group consists of only eight people. Such a small number of people reduces the stress the gorillas might experience when interacting with humans. Before embarking, each group will be assigned a guide, who will inform each member of the dos and don’ts in the park. Some guidelines include not feeding the gorillas, not eating in the vicinity of the gorillas, and speaking in a whisper. The gorillas travel in groups and move further inside the mountains, looking for fruits and food.Locating them can be difficult. Park trackers are sent out to track gorillas in the morning and find their initial positions. Therefore, when you set out, our guides will have a rough idea of the
location of the animals. Still, it may take 2-3 hours to locate a family of gorillas.
Normally, there is only one gorilla tracking session per day in the park.

2. What is the Level of Difficulty and Fitness Required for Tracking the Animals?

Climbing the mountains can be difficult because it requires navigating through thickets and bushes. It also involves climbing the mountains and trying to make inroads in some areas that do not have paths. The degree of difficulty increases during the rainy season between March to Mayand October to November. During this period, the trekking path is muddy and slippery. You should also note that you will climb at a higher altitude, between 2700 and 3500 meters above sea level, depending on the assigned gorilla group’s location. Thus, this altitude may affect some who have not acclimatized to it.The park also has porters, whom you can hire for a fee. These locals help carry your bags and offer moral support when looking for the final push. Hiring locals is one way to give back to the community.Physically disabled trekkers can request to be carried on a stretcher if they cannot make the
journey. All this is possible, of course, for a fee.

3 . The Best Time to Track the Gorillas.

Tracking the gorillas is done throughout the year. However, the journey is much easier during
the dry season, which lasts from June to August and July to September.

4.The Bottom Line
Gorilla tracking Adventure is an enjoyable activity that lets you clear your mind and learn more
about these animals that share 98 percent of their DNA with human beings. However, due to the
limited number of gorilla groups, there is a high demand for viewing them. We at ACROSS
AFRICA TOURS can make this trip happen by preparing earlier.
