6 Things to do in Loango National Park

Loango National Park offers a variety of activities to ensure that you enjoy all of its natural
beauty. You can try a few things while visiting Loango National Park.

  • Game drives

The park is an absolute steal when it comes to a game drive. The park has a lot to offer nature lovers, birders, and ecosystem enthusiasts. A game drive will cover the exhilarating forest cover and mirrored waterways. You will also catch a glimpse of the vast wildlife in the park, including monkeys, sitatungas, crocodiles, and forest elephants. The destination is perfect for a sundowner.

On a visit to this serene ecosystem, you wouldn’t fail to miss an elephant taking a stroll in the muddy waters, a pack of lions hunting for a kill, a buffalo slowly charming the evergreen grass, or maybe a rhino taking a busk while listening to the chirping birds of Loango. The park is brimming with several species of trees, including mangrove forests, a vast coverage of savanna, and tidal lagoons.

  • Bird watching

Birders are also not left alone. Carry your binoculars to catch a glimpse of the almost 100 bird species as they perch in the trees and take off.

  • Boat Safaris.

A boat safari will enable you to explore the vast lagoons in the bark, see the forest elephants along the Akaka river, and see the sitatungas as they graze the vast park. The boa safari is quite interesting during the rainy season between November and April.

  • Turtle patrol

A visit to the park would be incomplete without exploring the turtle patrol. The Loango is home to the largest leatherback turtle population in the world. In the October turtle season, our guides will venture with you to the nesting locations of the marine turtles. Besides the leatherback turtles, hawksbills, green turtles, and the olive ridley turtle species nestle in the pack.

  • Gorilla Trekking

Loango is also home to lowland habituated gorillas. The Atananga group is one of the habituated gorillas in the pack. Watch how these animals are close to the human species. However, these animals are often challenging to spot as they fear human interaction and are aggressive when they meet humans too close to them. Trekking to the gorillas is a unique experience, especially in January–May, since they are easy to spot and do not travel much.

  • Whale watching

The humpback whale is a famous visitor along the Loango coastline between July and September. Carry your camera and capture a vivid experience of this playful mammal as they arise and dive into the water.

The pack has two seasons, the dry and the rainy, each offering a unique experience. The dry season includes December through January and May through September. On the other hand, the rainy season has February–April and October–December.

The Loango National Park is a gold mine for adventure seekers, as it offers a variety of activities.
