Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Nouakchott – Gateway to the Sahara

Arrive in the capital city of Nouakchott, where your desert adventure begins. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel for check-in and relaxation. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore parts of the city, including the lively fish market along the Atlantic coast or local artisan markets. In the evening, your expedition team will provide a detailed safari briefing about the journey ahead across the Sahara Desert.

Day 2Nouakchott to Atar – Journey into the Adrar Region

After breakfast, depart northward on a scenic overland drive toward Atar, the historic gateway to the Sahara’s Adrar Mountains. As the landscape gradually transforms into rocky plateaus and open desert plains, you will begin to experience the scale and silence of the Sahara. Along the route, enjoy photo stops and small village visits before arriving in Atar for the evening.

Day 3Atar to Chinguetti – Ancient Desert Civilization

Today’s journey leads deeper into the desert to the legendary oasis town of Chinguetti, one of the Sahara’s most iconic ancient caravan cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once a major center of Islamic learning and trans-Saharan trade, Chinguetti is famous for its ancient stone architecture, historic libraries, and narrow sand-covered alleys. Spend the day exploring the old town, meeting local custodians of ancient manuscripts, and witnessing the timeless atmosphere of this desert settlement.

Day 4Erg Amatlich – The Great Sahara Dunes

Venture into the magnificent Erg Amatlich dune system, where giant waves of golden sand stretch endlessly across the horizon. This is one of the most spectacular desert regions in Mauritania, offering dramatic scenery ideal for photography and exploration. Travel by 4×4 through remote dune landscapes, stopping to walk along the crests and admire the ever-changing desert colors. As evening falls, enjoy a traditional Saharan camp experience beneath a sky filled with countless stars.

Day 5Hidden Oases and Desert Canyons

Continue your expedition through isolated desert valleys, rocky canyon routes, and hidden oases that provide life within the harsh Sahara environment. Discover palm groves surrounded by towering cliffs and learn about the traditional lifestyles of nomadic desert communities. The contrast between dry desert terrain and lush oasis vegetation creates some of the most striking scenery of the expedition.

Day 6 Return Toward Atar – Desert Landscapes and Nomadic Culture

Begin the return journey toward Atar while exploring more of the Adrar region’s extraordinary landscapes. Along the route, stop at scenic viewpoints, ancient rock formations, and remote desert settlements. This day offers opportunities to interact with local nomadic communities and gain deeper insight into the traditions and resilience of life in the Sahara Desert.

Day 7Atar to Nouakchott – Departure

After breakfast, depart Atar and travel back to Nouakchott for your onward flight. As the expedition concludes, take with you unforgettable memories of Mauritania’s endless dunes, ancient caravan towns, and the profound silence of the Sahara.
