Track forest elephants, lowland gorillas, and other rare wildlife in one of Africa’s most pristine rainforests. Witness the rich biodiversity of the Congo Basin while engaging with the local BaAka community to learn about their traditional forest life. This immersive safari blends wildlife encounters with cultural connection, offering unforgettable moments for nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and cultural explorers alike. Travelers will arrive at Bangui M’Poko International Airport, where they’ll be welcomed by a local guide. A short transfer brings them to their riverside hotel. After checking in and relaxing, they’ll enjoy a welcome dinner featuring local Central African cuisine. The guide will provide a briefing on the upcoming journey, and travelers can ask questions while enjoying views of the Ubangi River at sunset.
After an early breakfast, travelers embark on a scenic flight (or long 4×4 drive, depending on preference and road conditions) to Bayanga, a small village in the heart of the rainforest. Along the route, they’ll observe changing landscapes—savannah turning to thick tropical forest. Upon arrival, guests check into their rainforest lodge, where they’ll be surrounded by the sounds of cicadas and distant monkeys. The evening includes a relaxed dinner and preparations for the forest adventure ahead.
This is one of the trip’s highlights. After a safety briefing, guests will head deep into the forest with experienced trackers and researchers to locate habituated Western lowland gorillas. The group will spend an hour in silent observation, watching family dynamics, foraging, and grooming behaviors. It’s an emotional and humbling experience. A packed lunch is eaten in the forest clearing. Return in the late afternoon for rest and a hearty dinner at the lodge.
Guests head out early with binoculars and cameras to Dzanga Bai—an open, swampy clearing where up to 100 forest elephants gather daily to drink mineral-rich water and bathe. Visitors observe quietly from a raised viewing platform, spotting elephants, buffalo, sitatungas, and dozens of colorful birds. Rangers provide insight into elephant behavior. After hours immersed in nature, return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Today offers a rare opportunity to spend time with the BaAka people, one of Africa’s few remaining forest-dwelling hunter-gatherer groups. Travelers join the BaAka for a net-hunting demonstration—not to harm, but to showcase ancient techniques. Guests also help gather edible plants, learn to start fires with forest materials, and share a meal prepared in the wild. After returning to camp, the BaAka perform traditional polyphonic songs around the fire—a powerful cultural moment.
After breakfast, travelers enjoy a peaceful dugout canoe ride along the Sangha River, a tributary of the mighty Congo. They may spot fish eagles, kingfishers, crocodiles, and monkeys along the banks. This is a time to relax, reflect, and take in the pristine wilderness. Guests return to camp for lunch and have time to relax or take a short nature walk. A farewell dinner caps off the day.
After an early breakfast, travelers depart by flight or 4×4 back to Bangui. Lunch is served in the city, and there is time for final souvenir shopping before being dropped off at the airport or hotel for departure. Guests leave with powerful memories of Africa’s untouched rainforest and its gentle giants.
