Depart Bangui early in the morning and drive south to the Lobaye region, near the border with the Republic of the Congo. The road winds through farmland, villages, and finally into dense rainforest. Upon arrival at the BaAka forest settlement, guests are welcomed with a traditional greeting and a forest blessing dance. Local guides assist with setting up camp alongside the BaAka, and the evening ends with shared food, music, and introductions.
Accommodation: Tent camp in forest clearing
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Wake up to the smell of forest herbs and the sound of distant drumming. After breakfast, join the BaAka men and women for a net hunting demonstration (non-lethal, symbolic). Learn how the forest provides food, tools, and medicine. You’ll forage for mushrooms, wild roots, honey, and vines. Return to camp to help cook a traditional meal over an open fire. Later, the elders will show how to make fire using only natural materials. The day closes with storytelling in the BaAka language, translated by your guide.

Today is dedicated to the BaAka’s globally admired polyphonic music, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Guests will learn the basics of throat singing, drumming, and call-and-response harmonies. Women will demonstrate their unique singing styles, while the men play forest percussion instruments made from logs, vines, and gourds. You’ll join a circle of music-making, guided by the rhythm of the forest. In the evening, the BaAka will perform an ancient forest ceremonial piece rarely seen by outsiders.

Spend your final full day preparing a feast with your hosts. You’ll pound cassava, roast plantains, and cook wild greens and game over an earth oven. Then join in a forest dance session with full costumes, body painting, and symbolic storytelling through movement. Before sunset, your BaAka hosts will present you with a handmade memento (like a woven bracelet or carved pendant). The day ends with one final fire-circle of music, laughter, and heartfelt farewells.
