Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in São Vicente (Mindelo Vibes Begin)

You land at Cesária Évora International Airport (VXE) on São Vicente, usually via Lisbon or another hub. After meeting your transfer, you drive 10–15 minutes into Mindelo, the cultural capital of Cabo Verde. You check into your hotel near the town centre so you’re within easy walking distance of the Praça Nova, harbour, and main carnival streets. The rest of the day is for a slow wander: stroll along the waterfront, watch kids playing football on the beach, and maybe stop in a pastel-coloured café for your first cachupa or grilled tuna. In the evening, find a restaurant with live morna or coladeira; the music scene here is intimate and atmospheric, and it sets the tone for the days to come.

Day 2Discovering Mindelo & Early Carnival Atmosphere

After breakfast, you spend the morning getting to know Mindelo properly. Walk through the Mercado Municipal for fruit, spices and local life, then explore the colonial-style streets around Praça Estrela and the old harbour warehouses. If you like viewpoints, you can take a short trip up to Monte Verde for panoramic views over the bay and the surrounding coastline. By afternoon, you’re back in town as the carnival mood ramps up: groups rehearse drumming patterns in side streets, kids parade in homemade costumes, and small bars start playing carnival tracks on repeat. In the evening, you join the crowd in the centre – maybe a warm-up street party, a rehearsal parade or live band in the square – getting your first real taste of Mindelo’s carnival energy.

Day 3Pre-Carnival Sunday: Mandinga & Street Parties

This is usually one of the most atmospheric days before the main parades. After a lazy seaside breakfast, you can head to Laginha Beach for a swim – white sand, turquoise water and views across to São Nicolau on a clear day.In the afternoon, you go searching for the famous Mandinga groups: men and boys painted black and dressed in warrior-style costumes, dancing and chanting their way through the streets, a tradition deeply linked to African identity on São Vicente. The city slowly fills with vendors grilling meat and fish, caipirinhas and grogue cocktails, and a rising drumbeat echoing between the buildings. As night falls, you drift between bars, makeshift sound systems and open-air concerts – but you pace yourself, because the biggest days are still ahead.

Day 4Monday 16 February 2026: Tropical / Samba Parades

Today Mindelo slides fully into carnival mode. After a relaxed morning (sleep in, strong coffee, maybe another quick beach swim), you position yourself along one of the main avenues used by the parades. On this Monday, São Vicente hosts lively samba / tropical parades, where smaller schools and guest groups take over the streets with Brazilian-inspired costumes, feathers, sequins and booming percussion. You spend the afternoon and evening moving with the crowds, watching the floats and dancers pass, grabbing snacks from street stalls and joining in whenever the rhythm is irresistible.
There’s no rush; carnival is as much about wandering, people-watching and chatting as the parades themselves. Late at night, music spills into the bars and clubs – if you’ve still got energy, you can dance until very late.

Day 5Tuesday 17 February 2026: Main Carnival Parade

This is the day. After a good breakfast, you spend a quiet late morning – maybe sitting in a café near the square – because the main parade tends to kick off later in the afternoon and run into the night.By mid afternoon you find a good spot along the official parade route (or buy a simple stand ticket if available) as the official carnival groups roll out: enormous floats, thousands of costumed dancers, stadium-level sound systems and carefully choreographed performances. This is when Mindelo becomes a full-scale theatre, with each group telling its own story through costume, music and dance, competing for top honours. You let yourself be pulled along by the rhythm – cheering with the crowd, taking photos, dancing in the gaps between floats. When the formal parade finally ends, the party doesn’t: streets turn into an open-air after-party, with spontaneous dancing and music until the early hours.

Day 6Recovery Day & São Vicente Island Tour

After two intense days and late nights, today is lighter. In the late morning you join a half-day island tour of São Vicente: driving up Monte Verde again if you wish, visiting windswept beaches on the north coast, and stopping in small fishing villages like Calhau. You have lunch in a simple local restaurant – fresh catch of the day, rice, and vegetables – then return to Mindelo for a free afternoon:beach, nap, or a gentle wander through town now that the streets are (slightly) calmer. In the evening you choose a more relaxed restaurant with live acoustic music; tonight is about soaking up the post carnival glow rather than going hard again.

Day 7Day Trip to Santo Antão: Mountains & Villages

Today you swap carnival for dramatic landscapes. Early in the morning you board the ferry from Mindelo to Porto Novoon Santo Antão, a crossing of about an hour across the channel. Visit Cabo Verde On arrival, a local driver/guide takes you up into the mountains via one of the most spectacular roads in the archipelago: sheer ridges, deep green valleys and terraced fields clinging to the slopes. You spend the day visiting highland villages, walking short sections of cobbled mountain paths (or a longer hike if you’re keen), and stopping at viewpoints that look straight out of a fantasy film. Lunch is typically in a family run restaurant in a village like Ponta do Sol or Ribeira Grande, where you might taste local grogue (sugar-cane spirit) and homemade cheese. By late afternoon you return to Porto Novo, catch the ferry back to Mindelo and enjoy a final relaxed dinner in town.

Day 8Last Morning in Mindelo & Departure

On your final morning you have a slow breakfast, then pick up any last souvenirs: local music CDs or vinyl, Cape Verdean crafts, maybe a T-shirt from your favourite carnival group. If your flight is later in the day, you might fit in one last swim at Laginha Beach or a coffee on the harbour promenade. At the agreed time, your transfer takes you back to Cesária Évora Airport for your flight out of Cabo Verde. As you depart, you’ll be carrying vivid memories of feathered costumes, thunderous drums, warm sea breezes and the feeling of being swept into one of the most authentic carnivals in the Atlantic.
