    Itinerary

    Stop AtConvict Cemetery

Here’s your chance to learn about Paris commune exiles and Queen Hortense’s attempts to hide with a visit to Convict Cemetery, Notre Dame l’Assomption, and Queen Hortense’s Cave. Along the way soak in the beautiful island and bay views.

Take a ride to the Kuto area to see crumbling prison walls and stand at Convict Cemetery, the final resting place of nearly 200 Paris deportees who died in exile in the late 1800s. Look past the 12 rows of unmarked graves to see the white, pyramid-shaped monument erected to the more than 20 women and children who lost their lives while attempting to escape the island in a handmade boat.

    Stop AtQueen Hortense's Cave

Walk to the freshwater cave where 16-year-old Queen Hortense hid out for one year while various outside tribes warmed up to the idea of a female succeeding her father the Chief.

    Stop AtNotre Dame l'Assomption

Marvel at the pretty stained-glass windows and construction of Notre Dame de l’Assomption, built-in 1860 entirely by convicts.

    Stop AtVao Village

While at Vao village enjoy gorgeous views of St. Joseph Bay and St. Maurice Bay and nearby Brush Island. Stop for lunch at Mr. Jean Kaatheu’s Place to enjoy sumptuous local fare including chicken or fish, salad, dessert, and coffee or tea. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.
