Tour Details

Machame route also known as the “whiskey” is now the most popular route on the mountain. The walks on the way are steeper, but days are longer, unlike maragu. It is considered a difficult path, better suited for more adventurous folks, and those with some hiking or backpacking experience. The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although seven days are recommended.

The route is scenically beautiful and varied. It approaches from the southwest and descends using mweka, rewarding climbers with views of the expansive Shira plateau. In like manner to the optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco Wall, and a traverse underneath Kilimanjaro Southern Ice field.

Climbers spend their overnight at the tents at the designated campsite and eat meals either outdoors or inside a large dining tent.

Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Tanzania

Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport. You will be met at the airport and transferred to the K’S Hotel in Moshi
for your overnight Dinner and Breakfast Included. You can start your trek any day of the year!

Day 02Machame Hut Camp (10,000') (day one on the mountain)

After breakfast at the Hotel, drive to Machame gate (10,000ft) for registration. Meet the rest of the crew (Cooks and Porters) ready for the climb. You will start the hill through the rainforest and the giant heathers for six hours to the first overnight camp.

Day 03Shira Camp (12,480') (day 2 on the mountain

After breakfast at the camp, you will have a short trek but rather steep rocky and dust trails. It is a slow hike with plenty of breaks and enough time to acclimatize. Commonly the route is rather bare of vegetation providing little shade from the heat. You will cross many ridges and see the first of many Senecias. Dinner and overnight to be spent at Shira camp

Day 04Barranco Camp (13,000') (day 3 on the mountain)

After breakfast, you will start climbing over the boulders and very few rocks, then steady uphill climb to lava tower. Stop for lunch at around noon, but to the interested, they may continue up the lava tower which is 14850 ft. Due to the altitude change, you can get a mild headache. Later move down for about 2hrs through dusty and rocky trails to Barranco camp at 1300 ft. Dinner and overnight to be spent at the Barranco Camp

Day 05Karanga Valley Camp (13,450') (day four on the mountain)

Wake up for an early game drive at the camp. Start scrambling up the Barranco wall for an hour and a half which is steep. You will be using your hands to reach and steady yourself like rock climbing, although it is not as challenging as rock climbing. You will walk up and descends the greener valley which is the last water point to the mountain. At the top of the wall, you can see the Barranco Valley. Dinner and overnight at the Barranco Camp

Day 06Barafu Hut Camp (14,200') (day five on the mountain)

After breakfast at the Camp, start your climb across a barren landscape with lots of boulders and shattered rocks. You will see the Decken glaciers on your left. Keep going a very steep ridge until you reach a rocky section for more scrambling for about hour and a half. The next camp will be on large rocks with very steep cliff faces. Go to bed very early because you will have to wake up at 11.00p.m for the summit. Meanwhile dinner and overnight will be at the barafu cam

Day 07 Summit Day and Mweka Hut (10,500') (day six on the mountain)

You will start the climb at around midnight. First, start with very steep rocks for 1 hour, and then enter a snow-covered area where you can see glaciers above. If it is a moonlight night, turn off your headlamp and walk in the moonlight, it is a beautiful experience. Next 2 hours to Stella Point, but be taking a break every 15 minutes as the struggle gets more mentally and physically challenging. Then get to Stella Point where the Lava fields are like loose sand. It will be amusing and frustrating because you will take two steps. Later on, after breakfast, climb to Uhuru Peak for 1hr just as the sun appears over the Mawenzi peaks. You will be at Uhuru Peak (19370ft) around 6.00 or 7:00 am and afterward, start your descent which is steep and rigorous via Stella Point to Barafu hut Camp. In addition to that, stop at Barafu Camp for lunch and a good rest before you proceed to Mweka camp, a very comfortable hike, but very dusty (in the dry season) and long. Evening meals and overnight to be spent Millenniun camp.

Day 8Back to Arusha

Mweka Camp (3100m) to Mweka Gate (2000m), distance is about 15 kms. You will camp for the night at Mweka camp (3100m) before departing for the Mweka Parks Gate the next morning where your driver will pick up and take you back to the K’S Hotel in moshi.
