Nakuru Day Trip – Wildlife, Scenic Views & Culture

Itinerary

5:30 AM – Departure from Nairobi

Depart Nairobi early in the morning and drive along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway, enjoying views of the Great Rift Valley along the way.

8:30 AM – Lake Nakuru National Park

Enter Lake Nakuru National Park for a morning game drive. Explore the park’s forests, grasslands and lakeshore while searching for black and white rhinos, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, waterbucks and other wildlife. The park is also an important bird habitat.

11:30 AM – Baboon Cliff / Lake Viewpoint

Stop at one of the park’s scenic viewpoints for photographs and panoramic views over Lake Nakuru. Baboon Cliff, Lion Hill and Out of Africa Hill are among the park’s notable viewpoints.

12:30 PM – Picnic Lunch

Enjoy a packed lunch at a designated picnic area, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the park.

1:30 PM – Continue Game Drive

Proceed with your game drive, with an opportunity to explore additional sections of the park and visit areas around Makalia Falls, depending on road and weather conditions.

3:00 PM – Menengai Crater

Leave the park and drive to Menengai Crater. Enjoy panoramic views across Nakuru and the surrounding Rift Valley. For active travellers, a short walk along the crater rim can be arranged. Menengai is a major volcanic feature north of Nakuru and is popular for hiking and photography.

4:30 PM – Depart Nakuru

Begin the return journey to Nairobi.

7:00–7:30 PM – Arrival in Nairobi

Arrive in Nairobi in the evening, marking the end of your Nakuru day trip.

For travellers interested in history rather than hiking, replace Menengai Crater with Hyrax Hill Museum. The National Museums of Kenya site preserves evidence of human settlement spanning more than 5,000 years and offers views over the Rift Valley.
