Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Freetown – Welcome to Sierra Leone

Upon arrival at Freetown International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional tour guide and transferred by private vehicle to your hotel. After check-in and time to relax, enjoy a welcome briefing introducing you to Sierra Leone’s history, culture and traditions. Depending on your arrival time, take a leisurely evening stroll along the coast or enjoy a welcome dinner featuring traditional Sierra Leonean cuisine.

Day 2Freetown City Tour – History, Culture & Chimpanzee Conservation

After breakfast, embark on a guided exploration of Freetown, a historic coastal city founded as a settlement for freed Africans. Visit important landmarks, including the historic King’s Yard area, St. John’s Maroon Church, the National Museum and the iconic Cotton Tree area, subject to current site access. Continue to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, nestled in the Western Area Peninsula’s lush forest, to learn about chimpanzee conservation, wildlife protection and rehabilitation efforts. Return to Freetown for an evening at leisure.

Day 3Bunce Island – A Journey Through African Heritage

Today, take a boat excursion to Bunce Island, one of Sierra Leone’s most significant historical sites. Explore the remains of the former British slave-trading fort with a knowledgeable guide and learn about the lives of enslaved Africans, the transatlantic slave trade and its far-reaching impact on communities across Africa and the Americas. The excursion offers an opportunity for reflection and a deeper understanding of Sierra Leone’s place in global history. Return to Freetown in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxed evening.

Day 4Freetown to Bo – Scenic Journey into Southern Sierra Leone

After breakfast, depart Freetown for a scenic overland journey towards Bo, one of Sierra Leone’s principal cities in the south. Travel through green countryside, rural settlements, agricultural landscapes and traditional villages, with opportunities to stop along the way for refreshments and photographs. On arrival in Bo, enjoy a short orientation tour of the city, visit local markets and experience everyday life in this lively regional centre. Check in to your hotel and relax in preparation for the following day’s rainforest adventure.

Day 5Tiwai Island – Rainforest Wildlife & River Adventure

Continue your journey to Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, a remarkable biodiversity destination located on the Moa River. After settling into your eco-lodge or nature camp, embark on a guided forest walk through the lush tropical rainforest, home to several primate species, including rare Diana monkeys and western chimpanzees. Discover the island’s extraordinary birdlife, butterflies and diverse forest ecosystems with the help of experienced local naturalists. Along the way, make selected stops to discover local crafts, agricultural traditions and the daily lives of people in the countryside. Arrive in Freetown in the evening, check in to your hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest after the scenic drive.

Day 7 Banana Islands – Tropical Island Escape

After breakfast, travel to the coast and board a boat for the beautiful Banana Islands, a peaceful archipelago known for its palm-fringed beaches, clear waters and traditional fishing communities. On arrival, check in to your island accommodation and enjoy a guided exploration of the local surroundings. Day 9 Banana Islands to Tokeh & River No. 2 Beach – Coastal Paradise

Visit River No. 2 Beach, famous for its golden sand, picturesque river mouth and tropical scenery.
