Itinerary

Stop AtLe Belvédère du Maïdo

Le Maïdo offers an exceptional panoramic view of the stunning Cirque de Mafate, one of Reunion Island’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. Situated at an impressive altitude of 2,190 meters in the Hauts de Saint-Paul, the Maïdo viewpoint provides a spectacular view without the need for a hike. Whether you’re gazing from the islet of Roche-Plate to La Nouvelle or taking in the sight of Piton Cabris and Piton des Neiges, this viewpoint allows you to fully appreciate the grandeur and dizzying beauty of the Cirque de Mafate. On a clear day, visiting Maïdo is an unforgettable experience that showcases the island’s dramatic landscape in all its glory.

Stop At Le Tour des Roches

Just a few minutes from the city center of Saint-Paul, the Tour des Roches offers a charming walking circuit that can be explored by car, bike, or on foot. The lush vegetation along the route makes it a delightful destination, especially during the early morning or late afternoon when the light from the rising or setting sun enhances the scenery.

The journey begins at the iconic water mill, a historical landmark of the Tour des Roches. Originally part of a cassava mill, the water-driven wheel once generated energy and dates back to 1820. A recent restoration has preserved its original design. For those who don’t mind a refreshing dip in cold water, the small pool next to the mill offers a perfect spot to cool off or enjoy a swim.

This area of Saint-Paul transports visitors to a quieter, more serene time, with the peaceful atmosphere enhanced by the nearby Saint-Paul pond. The Tour des Roches is also home to a variety of plant species, including bamboo, coconut trees, palm trees, and papyrus. This tranquil spot, rich in history and natural beauty, is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the peaceful side of Reunion Island.

Stop AtL’Etang Saint Paul

The Saint-Paul Pond, located on the west coast of Reunion Island, has earned its reputation as the largest and best-preserved protected coastal wetland in the Mascarenes. Covering an area of 485 hectares, this exceptional site boasts a rich biodiversity, providing a vital habitat for numerous species of birds, fish, insects, and plants. Recognized for its global importance, the Saint-Paul Pond is the 49th French site, 12th overseas site, and 4th site in the Indian Ocean to receive international recognition. It is also the first site in Reunion Island to receive this prestigious distinction.

This freshwater pond, nourished by both saltwater sources and natural freshwater, is home to a variety of unique ecosystems. The diverse habitats not only enhance the site’s biodiversity but also contribute to the ecological richness of the entire Mascarene archipelago. The Saint-Paul Pond is a key natural treasure of Reunion, offering both ecological significance and an unparalleled glimpse into the island’s natural heritage.

Stop AtLe Cap La Houssaye

Cape La Houssaye, located on the western coast of Reunion Island, is named after Mr. Guillaume La Houssaye, a Breton naval captain known for his mediation skills and popular reputation in the late 17th century. Between 1689 and 1712, La Houssaye made six voyages to the Indian Ocean, including five stops at Reunion. His efforts to resolve conflicts between colonists and the East India Company earned him great respect, and decades later, a governor of the island named the cape in his honor.

In the late 19th century, a road was constructed between 1861 and 1871 to connect Saint-Paul, Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, and Saint-Leu, providing an easier alternative to the previously difficult path through the island’s heights.

The surrounding landscape, resembling an African savannah, is a result of the island’s hot and dry climate. The gentle terrain offers sweeping views of the coastline, with golden grass swaying in the wind and the black basalt spurs looming in the distance. The landscape changes with the seasons, transitioning from lush green hues to rusty tones. Visitors can explore this area on foot or horseback, uncovering hidden heritage relics such as old paved paths, stone pipes, and mysterious caves.

Cape La Houssaye, marking the southern edge of the Saint-Paul Bay, is a popular spot for both locals and visitors. It offers the perfect setting for watching skilled fishermen, admiring beautiful sunsets, or witnessing the spectacular ballet of humpback whales during the southern winter. The area is also renowned for its excellent scuba diving opportunities, making it a must-visit destination for nature and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Stop AtLe Cimetière Marin / Le Cimetière des Esclaves Oubliés

The Saint-Paul Marine Cemetery, located on the edge of the Indian Ocean in the bay of Saint-Paul on Reunion Island, is a historically significant site that has been fully registered in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments since January 26, 2012. This picturesque cemetery overlooks a black sandy beach and is known for its connection to the island’s maritime history, with many pirates said to be buried here, including the infamous Olivier Levasseur, whose legendary treasure, known as the La Buse treasure, continues to intrigue treasure hunters.

In addition to its pirate lore, the cemetery is also the final resting place of notable figures from French literature and art. The renowned Parnassian poet Leconte de Lisle, who expressed a wish in his poems Le Manchy and Si l’Aurore to be buried here, was transferred from the Montparnasse Cemetery in Paris to Saint-Paul in 1977. The cemetery also houses the tombs of poet Eugène Dayot and painter Arthur Grimaud, adding to its cultural and historical significance.

Stop AtLa Plage de l’Hermitage

Hermitage Beach, located on Reunion Island, is a stunning white sandy beach that stretches over 7 km, making it the longest on the island. Protected by a coral reef, this beach offers calm waters and is shaded by numerous casuarina trees lining its coastline, providing a perfect spot for relaxation. The coral formations here are over 8,000 years old, and the reefs, which are considered a fringing reef, are directly attached to the coast, creating a vibrant marine ecosystem.

The beach is an ideal location for snorkeling, so don’t forget to bring fins, masks, and snorkels to explore the rich underwater world, where you can observe a variety of fish species. At the southern end of the beach, you’ll find the picturesque Hermitage Pass, which marks the boundary with La Saline Beach.

Stop At Le Jardin d’Eden (or) La Maison du Géranium

Nestled in the heart of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, just a short distance from Hermitage Beach, the Garden of Eden on Reunion Island is a breathtaking ethnobotanical garden offering a stunning display of lush, diverse vegetation. Spanning 2.5 hectares, this tropical sanctuary is home to over 700 species, including endemic, native, and exotic plants, showcasing the deep connection between nature and humanity. You  can explore this plant paradise, where the tropical climate and the melodic songs of birds create an idyllic setting for relaxation and discovery.

Or you can visit La Maison du Geranium, here you will explore a wide range of geranium-based products available for purchase, including essential oils, perfumes, massage oils, beauty products, and teas. In addition to geranium-related items, the shop also offers local specialties such as homemade jams, coffee, spices from Reunion, and the Mascarenes. The experience is complemented by a delightful tasting session featuring white geranium tea, geranium jelly, seasonal fruit jams, and even the famous “Ti son” cake and arranged rum—allowing visitors to savor the essence of Reunion Island in every bite and sip. Thi will be the end of our day tour, hence you will return back in time for to your cruise or place of accommodation
