3 Hours Before Flight Time
Begin by exploring the Historic Route, from the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela to the majestic Simien Mountains and the ancient Blue Nile Falls. Travel through the imperial city of Gondar and visit the spiritual treasures of Lake Tana and Debre Libanos Monastery. Then, delve into the vibrant cultures of the Omo Valley, meeting the fascinating tribes of Ethiopia, including the Hamar, Mursi, and Karo people, who still maintain their traditional ways of life. With rich history, stunning landscapes, and cultural immersion, this tour offers the best of Ethiopia’s past and present.
Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide. After a brief introduction, you will be transferred to your hotel for check-in and relaxation. This evening will be free for you to unwind after your flight and prepare for the exciting days ahead.

After breakfast, take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar, one of Ethiopia’s most scenic destinations. Upon arrival, visit the Blue Nile Falls, known as Tis Issat or “The Smoking Water.” These spectacular falls offer breathtaking views and are a must-see natural wonder.
In the afternoon, embark on a boat trip across Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake, spanning 3,600 square kilometers. During the boat ride, you’ll visit two remarkable island monasteries: Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Mariam, both dating back to the 14th century. These monasteries are famous for their colorful murals and rich religious history.

After breakfast, depart Bahir Dar and embark on a scenic drive to Sankaber, the headquarters of Simien Mountains National Park. Along the way, you’ll pass through picturesque rural villages and mountain passes, offering stunning vistas of Ethiopia’s rugged highlands.
The Simien Mountains National Park covers 180 square kilometers, located between altitudes of 1,900 meters (6,200 feet) and 4,430 meters (14,500 feet). The park is renowned for its diverse flora, ranging from the afro-alpine meadows at higher altitudes to lush vegetation in the lower reaches. You’ll encounter unique species such as Lobelia rhynchopetalum, Helichrysum, and the eye-catching Kniphofia foliosa.
In the afternoon, take a short walk near the lodge, where you may spot the Gelada baboon, a species endemic to Ethiopia, while enjoying the park’s breathtaking scenery.

After breakfast, embark on a full-day hike with a picnic lunch through the stunning Simien Mountains. Head to Chenek, an area renowned for its remarkable landscapes and rich wildlife. As you trek, enjoy panoramic vistas that overlook the deep gorges and steep cliffs of the Simien Escarpment.
The hike will take you through century-old footpaths, allowing you to explore the jagged pinnacles, lush valleys, and unique wildlife of the region. Be on the lookout for the endemic Walia Ibex, a wild goat species found only in this area. The Gelada baboons are also commonly seen, living alongside the local pastures in this remote wilderness.
This day of hiking and exploration offers a chance to connect with the natural beauty and wildlife of one of Ethiopia’s most iconic parks.

After breakfast, begin your scenic drive from Simien Mountains to Gondar, a city rich in Ethiopian history. On the way, you’ll stop to visit the former village of the Felasha, an ancient community of African Jews who migrated to Israel. This historical site offers a unique glimpse into the lives of a group that played a significant role in Ethiopia’s diverse cultural heritage.
Upon arrival in Gondar, spend the afternoon exploring the Royal Enclosure. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a stunning collection of royal buildings, including the imposing two-story palace of Emperor Fasilidas, built from solid basalt stones. Other sites to explore include the library of Emperor Yohannes I, the House of Song (where royal ceremonies were held), the reception and banquet hall of Emperor Bakaffa, and the palace of the king’s wife.
You’ll also visit the nearby Bath of King Fasilidas, a ceremonial bath where the Timkat festival is celebrated every year, and the Church of Debre Birhan Selassie, known for its colorful, frescoed ceilings.

After breakfast, catch a morning flight from Gondar to Lalibela, one of Ethiopia’s most iconic historical sites, known for its incredible 12th-century rock-hewn churches built by King Lalibela. These churches are carved from solid rock and are considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the afternoon, start your exploration by visiting the first group of churches. This group includes some of the most famous rock-hewn structures, such as Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, and Bet Masqal, all showcasing intricate craftsmanship and religious significance.
The afternoon visit will give you a first taste of Lalibela’s unique architectural wonders, which are considered one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of African architecture.

In the morning, embark on an exciting mule-back ride to the Asheton Mariam Monastery, a 13th-century semi-monolithic church perched on a hilltop. The journey to the top offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the town of Lalibela and its remarkable churches, making it a rewarding experience.
In the afternoon, continue your exploration of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches by visiting the second and third groups of churches. These include Bet Giyorgis, famous for its cross-shaped design, and other hidden gems that showcase the ingenuity and devotion of the builders who crafted these structures from solid rock.
End your day with a deeper appreciation of Lalibela’s architectural and spiritual significance.

In the morning, fly back from Lalibela to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, embark on a scenic drive 200 km south to the stunning Rift Valley region. En route, you’ll pass through a series of Rift Valley Lakes, including Lake Ziway, Lake Langano, Lake Abiyata, and Lake Shalla, each with its unique beauty.
At Lake Ziway, take time to spot various bird species, as the lake is a known bird-watching haven. Continue your journey to Lake Langano, where you can unwind and enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear waters, known for its safe, non-crocodile environment.
After a relaxing day, check in to your accommodation for a well-deserved rest.

After breakfast, depart Langano for Arba Minch, traveling through the fertile lands of the Wolita and Alaba regions. The Alaba people are renowned for their stunning home painting styles, and you’ll have the opportunity to admire their intricate, colorful artwork as you pass through the area.
On the way, stop by the Sinkile Wildlife Sanctuary, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The sanctuary is home to the endemic Swainson’s hartebeest, a rare species of antelope, along with a variety of other mammals and bird species. Take your time to enjoy the sanctuary’s natural beauty and diverse wildlife.
Upon arrival in Arba Minch, check into your hotel to relax and prepare for the next leg of your adventure.

After breakfast, drive to Chencha to visit the Dorze village, where you’ll meet the Dorze people, known for their impressive weaving tradition and elephant-shaped traditional huts made from bamboo and the leaves of the false banana tree. As you explore the village, you’ll witness the daily life of the Dorze people, from their farming activities to their unique crafts and practices.
After returning to Arba Minch for lunch, embark on a relaxing boat trip on Lake Chamo, one of the beautiful Rift Valley lakes. During the boat ride, you’ll visit the famous Crocodile Market, where you can observe large numbers of crocodiles sunbathing along the shore. You’ll also have the chance to spot hippos, aquatic birds, and enjoy the serene beauty of the lake.

After breakfast, depart Arba Minch and embark on a scenic drive south to Jinka, crossing the picturesque Weito Valley. Along the way, visit the Tsemay village, where the local people have preserved their traditional way of life. Continue on to the Woito people, who reside in the area around the Woito River, and gain insight into their unique culture.
Next, visit the Konso village, which has recently been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Konso people are renowned for their advanced rock terracing and colorful, hand-woven cotton clothes, making their culture and landscape distinctive.
As you continue toward Jinka, stop by the Ari village, where you can explore the culture of the Ari people along the way.

After breakfast, depart Jinka and drive to Mursi village, home to the Mursi tribe, renowned for their distinctive cultural practices. The Mursi women are particularly famous for their unique custom of lower lip plates, where, upon reaching maturity, their lower lips are slit and large circular disks are inserted as a symbol of beauty and status. Explore their village and learn more about their fascinating traditions.
Continue your journey to Turmi, the settlement of the Hamer people, known for their striking appearance and vibrant cultural practices. The women of the Hamer are easily recognized by their ochre-colored hair arranged in thick plaits, leather skirts adorned with cowrie shells, and numerous copper bracelets. The men of the tribe are famous for their bull-jumping initiation ceremony, a thrilling ritual that marks the transition into adulthood. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of this exciting event during your visit.

After breakfast, embark on an excursion to Murulle, the village of the Karo people, one of the smallest tribes in Ethiopia. The Karo tribe is famous for their body paintings, which they apply before important ceremonies. These intricate and symbolic body and face decorations are stunning and serve as expressions of beauty and cultural significance. Take time to appreciate their artistic designs and learn about the meanings behind their colorful patterns.
In the afternoon, return to Turmi and visit the Hamer village once more. This offers a chance to further explore the culture of the Hamer people, particularly their unique lifestyle, traditional customs, and daily activities.

After breakfast, drive back to Arba Minch for your afternoon flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, you will have some free time for shopping in Addis Ababa, where you can pick up souvenirs and traditional Ethiopian handicrafts to remember your journey.
In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at one of the best traditional restaurants in Addis. Indulge in a variety of delicious Ethiopian meals and experience the vibrant folkloric dances of the Ethiopian people, giving you a memorable cultural farewell before your departure.
