Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Addis Ababa

Upon your arrival at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your Dinknesh Ethiopia Tour representative, who will transfer you to your hotel.
Addis Ababa, founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II, is the bustling capital of Ethiopia and the headquarters of the African Union (AU). Situated at an altitude of 2,500 meters, the city enjoys a mild and pleasant climate year-round, with average temperatures around 16°C. Known for its rich history and cultural significance, Addis Ababa is not only the largest city in Ethiopia but also one of the highest capitals in the world, nestled at the foot of the Entoto Mountains.

Day 2Fly to Bahir Dar & Visit Lake Tana Monasteries

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Bahir Dar, a charming town located on the shores of Lake Tana. Upon arrival, embark on a scenic boat ride across Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia, covering 3,600 km². The lake is home to thirty-seven islands, many of which shelter historic monasteries. You will visit two of the most renowned: Ura-Kidane Mihret and Azwa-Mariam. These monasteries, rich in history and culture, are renowned for their stunning frescoes and ancient treasures depicting biblical stories. While on the Zeghe Peninsula, you can also explore the wild coffee plantations, believed to have been cultivated by monks centuries ago.
Overnight at Unison Hotel or a similar property.

Day 3Drive to Gondar & City Tour

After breakfast, depart for a scenic drive to Gondar, the historic 17th and 18th-century capital of Ethiopia, often referred to as the “Camelot of Africa.” Upon arrival, begin your city tour with a visit to the famous Royal Enclosure, home to six castles, including the magnificent Fasiledes Castle. Built in 1632 by King Fasiledes, the castle is the oldest and most impressive in the compound. You will learn about the fascinating history of the town, founded by King Fasiledes and later ruled by his son, King Johannes.

Next, explore the Bath of King Fasiledes, where the colorful Timkat (Epiphany) festival is celebrated every January, before heading to the Church of Debre Birhan Selassie. This iconic church, known for its vibrant ceiling frescoes of angels, stands as a symbol of resilience, never being destroyed even during the Dervish invasions. Its 18th-century painted ceilings are one of the highlights of Ethiopian church art.

Overnight at Goha Hotel or a similar property.

Day 4Excursion to Simien Mountains

After breakfast, drive to Debark, the gateway town to Simien Mountains National Park. Here, you will have the chance to observe the unique flora of the Afro-Alpine ecosystem and take in the breathtaking scenery of Ethiopia’s most dramatic mountain landscapes. The park, covering 180 square kilometers, is home to rugged valleys and jagged peaks formed by ancient seismic activity.

You will begin your trek through the park, enjoying views of the vast wilderness and observing the endemic Gelada baboons, known for their distinctive red chest patches. The Simien Mountains are home to a rich variety of plant species, including the rare Lobelia rhynchopetalum and vibrant kniphofia, which thrive in the park’s high-altitude meadows. As you hike, take in the stunning vistas of the mountain range and enjoy the sight of wildlife in their natural habitat.

Overnight at Goha Hotel or a similar property.

Day 5Fly to Lalibela & Visit the First Group of Rock-Hewn Churches

After breakfast, fly to Lalibela, located in the Lasta Mountains. Lalibela is renowned for its 11 rock-hewn churches, considered one of Africa’s greatest religious and historical sites. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries under King Lalibela, these churches represent a “New Jerusalem.”

You will visit the first group of churches, including Bete Medhanialem (the largest and tallest church), Bet Maryam (the oldest), and Bet Golgotha, known for its early Christian reliefs. These architectural masterpieces are carved from the rock and are a marvel of ancient engineering.

Overnight at Maribella Hotel or similar.

Day 6Lalibela – Second Group of Rock-Hewn Churches & Traditional Cooking Experience

In the morning, visit the second group of churches in Lalibela, representing the heavenly Jerusalem. This group includes Bete Gabriel & Raphael, Bete Merquorios, Bete Emmanuel, and Bete Abba Libanos. The highlight is Bete Giorgis (St. George), a cross-shaped church symbolizing Noah’s Ark, with its interior adorned with scenes of Saint George slaying the dragon.

In the afternoon, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian cooking experience, where you’ll learn how to prepare authentic local dishes.
