Hiking in the Simien Mountains 11 days/10 nights

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel, located just 15 minutes away.

Fly from Addis Ababa to Gondar and drive 136 km north to Sanka Ber, passing through Debark, the headquarters of Simien Mountains National Park. Upon reaching Sankaber, enjoy short walks to explore the breathtaking Simien Mountains and spot some of Ethiopia’s endemic mammals.

Trekking time: 5 – 6 hours
Activities: Trek from Sankaber to Geech, with a visit to the stunning Jinbar Falls along the way. Enjoy stops to take in the other spectacular views of the Simien Mountains.

Trekking time: ~7 hours
Activities: Trek from Geech to Chenek via Imetgogo, where you’ll enjoy some of the best views in Simien Mountains National Park. Today, you’ll have the opportunity to spot the Walia Ibex, an endemic species not only to the Simien Mountains but also to Ethiopia.

Trekking time: 6 – 8 hours
Activities: Trek from Chenek to Ambiqo, climbing Buhait Mountain, the second-highest peak in the Simien Mountain range after Ras Dashen.
Overnight: First-class camping with private cook.

Trekking time: 7 – 9 hours
Activities: Trek from Ambiqo to Ras Dashen, the highest peak in Ethiopia (4,620m), and then return to Ambiqo.
Overnight: First-class camping with private cook.

Trekking time: 6 – 8 hours
Activities: Trek back to Chenek. Along the way, you may have the chance to spot the Simien Fox or the Ethiopian Wolf.
Overnight: First-class camping with private cook.

Driving time: 5 hours
Activities: Drive back to Gondar and enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city.
Overnight: Goha Hotel or similar.

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Lalibela, home to the 12th-century, hand-carved rock churches built by King Lalibela (1181 – 1221), after whom the town is named.
After lunch at your hotel, visit the first group of churches in Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located northeast of a stream called ‘River Jordan.’

In the morning, take a mule ride to the hilltop semi-monolithic church of Asheten Mariam (13th Century AD). The peak of the hill offers a stunning viewpoint, providing a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding area, including the town of Lalibela. In the afternoon, visit the second and third groups of churches in Lalibela.

Fly back to Addis Ababa and enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city, including visits to the National Archaeological Museum and Merkato, the largest open-air market in East Africa. You will also have some time for shopping.

In the evening, be a guest of Dinknesh Ethiopia Tour at one of Addis Ababa’s famous traditional restaurants, where you can enjoy folkloric dances and sample a variety of Ethiopian dishes.
