Encounter chimpanzees and other primates, explore tropical forests with experienced local guides, travel through rural landscapes and experience the remarkable biodiversity of one of West Africa’s most rewarding emerging wildlife destinations.
Arrive at Freetown International Airport and meet your professional guide before transferring to your hotel. After check-in, enjoy time to relax and recover from your journey. Depending on your arrival time, take a short orientation of Freetown or enjoy a relaxed evening at your hotel.
After breakfast, travel into the forested hills surrounding Freetown to visit Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Enjoy a guided experience learning about chimpanzee rehabilitation, conservation and Sierra Leone’s efforts to protect its threatened wildlife. Continue with a nature walk through the surrounding Western Area Peninsula landscape, where you can look for birds, monkeys and other forest species. Return to Freetown for the evening.
Leave Freetown after breakfast and begin the scenic journey south towards Bo. Travel through changing landscapes of forest, farmland and rural communities. Along the way, make selected stops for photographs and short walks where appropriate. Arrive in Bo, one of southern Sierra Leone’s principal cities, and enjoy a relaxed evening before continuing deeper into the country’s rainforest region.
After breakfast, continue towards Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary. The journey takes you deeper into the forested landscapes of southeastern Sierra Leone. After arrival and check-in at your eco-lodge or nature camp, meet your local naturalist guide and receive an introduction to the sanctuary. Enjoy a first guided forest walk, listening for birds and observing the surrounding vegetation and wildlife. Spend the evening surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
Spend a full day exploring Tiwai Island, one of Sierra Leone’s most important wildlife destinations. Guided forest walks provide opportunities to search for chimpanzees, Diana monkeys and other primates, as well as colourful birds, butterflies and other rainforest species. Enjoy a guided exploration of the island’s forest ecosystem while learning from local naturalists about conservation and the importance of protecting this unique habitat.
Continue your exploration with a nature-focused day combining forest and river experiences. Depending on local conditions, enjoy a guided boat or canoe excursion along the Moa River, observing the surrounding forest and searching for wildlife along the riverbanks. Continue with a forest walk focused on birdlife and primates. The afternoon provides time to relax at the eco-lodge and enjoy the peaceful rainforest environment.
Depart Tiwai Island and continue towards the Gola Rainforest National Park region. This protected landscape forms part of the Upper Guinean Forest ecosystem, one of West Africa’s most biologically important forest regions. After settling into your accommodation, meet your local guide for an introductory walk and learn about the park’s wildlife, forest habitats and conservation initiatives.
Enjoy a full day of guided exploration in Gola Rainforest National Park. Walk beneath towering rainforest trees while searching for primates, forest birds, butterflies and other wildlife. With luck, you may encounter some of the forest’s more elusive species. Your guide will introduce you to the ecological importance of the Upper Guinean Forest and explain the role of local communities in protecting the region’s biodiversity. Spend your final evening in the rainforest.
After breakfast, begin the journey back towards Freetown and the airport, allowing sufficient time for the long transfer and your international departure. Depending on your flight schedule, there may be an opportunity for a final stop or refreshment break along the route. Your Sierra Leone Wildlife & Rainforest Adventure ends with your departure from Sierra Leone.
